Meet Mr. Nose Secretions himself!! This is pretty much what our little man looks like when he's awake--SNOT EVERYWHERE!! As you can see, they decided to hold off a day or two on as far as extubation goes. Yesterday when I was holding him (by the way, i got to hold him yesterday--it had only been since LAST THURSDAY--torture for any mom!), he was not happy about having to be suctioned, so I offered the end of my pinky finger for him to gnaw on. He was really going to town, so we tried a modified pacifier (basically just cut the side off so it would go around the tubing) and he really liked it! Unfortunately, when he got a good latch on the paci, he would start trying to breath through his nose which would just force snot out. With the increased secretions, he needed to be suctioned. With the suctioning, he needed to be comforted so he would suck harder on his paci--it was a vicious cycle until he finally calmed down. You can also see the the blue wire that goes in one nasal passage and out the other. When they really suction him out good they pull on that to jostle anything lose and gross out mommy.

Tomorrow is our care conference, scheduled for 2:00 ish. We will at least be sitting down with cardiology and the NICU attending physician all at the same time. Our prayer is that we get a better picture of what the rest of Chi's hospitalization will look like and what we can expect in this first year.

The following is a quick video of Chi. You can see him working on his paci and the gobs of secretions coming out and the sweet doo-hickey we use to suck them up. This was the calmest he was all day, except for when he is sleeping or sedated.

video not working.. will try again in a separate post.
